South Korea’s BEI has unveiled a new battery that promises to double drone flight times and perform exceptionally in extreme temperatures. The innovation not only propels the drone industry forward but also positions South Korea as a pivotal tech supplier for the United States amid rising concerns over Chinese technology.

BEI’s new battery boasts an impressive energy density of 410 Wh/kg, enabling drones to fly longer and cover 70% more distance than those equipped with standard lithium-ion batteries. Unlike conventional batteries that falter in harsh conditions, BEI’s creation powered a drone for 40 minutes at -20°C during independent tests in late 2024, while a standard battery lasted just 10 seconds under the same conditions.

Jaehee Sweeney, chief business development officer at BEI, says, “This is a game-changer for the drone industry. Our battery technology not only extends flight time significantly but also unlocks operational capabilities in extreme climates that were previously impossible. This opens up a world of possibilities for applications in defense, surveillance, delivery, and more.”

Beyond extended flight times, the battery’s superior energy density allows drones to carry heavier payloads, enhancing their versatility for tasks like aerial photography, mapping, and inspection. Its rapid recharging capabilities and exceptional lifespan further contribute to increased efficiency and reduced downtime for drone operators.

This development comes at a time when the United States is increasingly wary of Chinese technology due to security concerns.
